Mountaineers Take Two from the Lakers in Home Opener

The Wright State Laker Baseball team had their first home games of the season at Nischwitz Stadium on the Dayton Campus. The games were originally scheduled to be at Berea College but due to impending the weather the double header was moved up north for a Sunday doubleheader. The weather 

Game 1:

The Lakers watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 5-2 loss to Berea College on Sunday. Berea College scored on a triple by Nicholas Bottom, a groundout by Andrew Akins, and a walk by Ryan Blevens in the second inning.

Berea College fired up the offense in the second inning, when Bottom tripled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.

Griffen Norris pitched Berea College to victory. He surrendered two runs on four hits over five and a third innings, striking out four and walking one. Storm recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Berea College.

Billy Lanman took the loss for Lakers. He lasted four innings, allowing three hits and three runs while striking out two. Casey Grimm pitched well out of the bullpen for the Lakers going 5 innings while striking out three and only giving up two earned runs.

Ronaldo Acosta, Conor Schmitt, Stephen Hoendorf, Dakota Shatto-Craft, and Dustin Lewis each collected one hit to lead Lakers. Acosta and Hoendorf both had doubles for the Lakers. Fitzgerald and Schmitt were responsible for the Lakers runs.

 

Inside the Box Score:

  • Dustin Lewis had his third stolen base of the season.
  • Stephen Hoendorf continued his strong start with his second double of the season.
  • Lakers clean streak in the field stopped as they committed their first error of the season.
  • Berea out hit WSU-LC 10-5 in game one.

 

Game 2:

The Lakers poor defense led to an 8-1 loss to Berea College on Sunday. The home team struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Berea College, giving up eight runs and committing eight errors.

In the first inning, Berea College got their offense started. Caleb Gupton drew a walk, scoring two runs. Berea College scored three runs in the seventh inning. Nicholas Bottom, Tanner Crowe, and Ty Williams each had RBIs in the big inning. Josh Wilson earned the win for Berea College. He allowed four hits and one run over six and a third innings, striking out five. Devin Belleville threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. Belleville recorded the last two outs to earn the save for Berea College.

Carson Schuman took the loss for Lakers. He allowed five hits and five unearned runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out four. Conor Schmitt, Stephen Hoendorf, Tristan Becker, and Dustin Lewis each managed one hit to lead Lakers.

 

Inside the Box Score:

  • The normally sure handed Lakers had 8 errors. That is the second most the Lakers committed in the past 90 games played.
  • The Lakers gave up eight runs, but only one of those were earned.
  • Hoendorf hit another double in game two, for Hoendorf 3 of his five hits are now for extra bases.

 

Who's Next:

The Lakers will travel to Alice Lloyd College for a weekend series March 3rd and 4th. This will be the start of a twelve game road trip for the Lakers.
