#2 Ranked Lakers Stumble in Weekend Series Against #6 Cleary

Lakers entered the weekend facing off against #6 ranked Cleary University for a pivotal USCAA series. The Lakers unfortunately stumbled this weekend as they struggled to hit the ball. The Wright State Lakers went 1-3 on the weekend, and since winning seven in a row are 1-5. The Lakers have a big four game set next weekend with Cincinnati Clermont who is also ranked #2 in the USCAA. The Lakers are looking to qualify for their third straight Small College World Series.

Game 1: Cleary 9-0

Lakers fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 9-0 loss to Cleary University on Saturday.  The Lakers struggled to contain the high-powered offense of Cleary University, giving up nine runs. Cleary University got things moving in the second inning. A sacrifice bunt by Gino DeMarino scored one run for Cleary University. A single by Noah Greathouse in the second inning was a positive for Lakers.

Zach Kirby took the loss for Lakers. He went three and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out three and walking one. Lakers totaled six hits in the game. Stephen Hoendorf and Greathouse all collected multiple hits for Lakers.

 

Game 2: Cleary 5-2

Lakers watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 5-2 loss to Cleary University on Saturday. Cleary University scored on a double by Daniel Garcia in the first inning, a single by James Edwards in the first inning, and a single by John Grable in the second inning.

Casey Grimm took the loss for Lakers. He lasted six innings, allowing nine hits and five runs while striking out seven and walking zero. Dustin Lewis led Lakers with four hits in four at bats. Lakers didn't commit a single error in the field.

 

Game 3: Wright State Lake Campus 8-5

Lakers stole the lead late in the game in an 8-5 victory over Cleary University on Sunday. Lakers trailed 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Tyler Venters doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring three runs.

Carson Schuman got the win for Lakers. He surrendered five runs on eight hits over six innings, striking out one. Quintin Cantelli threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Cantelli recorded the last three outs to earn the save for Lakers.

Lakers socked three home runs on the day. Tristan Becker had a homer in the sixth inning. Greathouse went for the long ball in the second and fourth innings. Lakers scattered ten hits in the game. Isaac Fitzgerald, Greathouse, and Venters all collected multiple hits for Lakers.

 

Game 4: Cleary 7-2

Lakers fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 7-2 loss to Cleary University on Sunday. Cleary University took the lead on a home run in the second inning.

Cleary University scored four runs in the seventh inning. Bray, Cole Gilmer, and Jordan Hadley all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Lucas Sheriff took the loss for Lakers. He allowed seven hits and three runs over six innings, striking out two. Tristan Becker and Conor Schmitt each collected multiple hits for Lakers.

  • Lakers were outscored this weekend 26-9, and out hit 33-29
  • Noah Greathouse two home runs pushed him into the Lakers lead in home runs on the year with 4, he also leads the Lakers in extra base hits with 13
  • Lakers team batting average this season stands at .290 while opponents are only hitting .226 on the year against the Lakers
  • The Lakers normally aggressive on the basepaths only had one stolen base in the four games against Cleary
