Lakers Drop Third Straight

The Wright State Lake Men's Basketball team took on Cincinnati Christian today and dropped to 0-3 with a 111-70 loss. Not a lot went right for the Lakers as a team in the matchup with the Eagles.

How It Happened: Wright State Lake came out looking to get quality offense, but early on you could see the CCU pressure disrupted the flow of the Laker offense. The Eagles scored 23 points off 13 first half turnovers by the Lakers. Those easy opportunities for the Eagles allowed them to find rhythm offensively shooting 60% from the floor in the first half.

In the second half, the Lakers started to create better offensive possessions led by a three pronged attack of Vonzell GroomGilbert Carter, and Tyler Daniel. The three combined for 54 of the 70 Laker points. The Laker offense put the CCU defense on their heels multiple times but were unable to finish plays. Wright State Lake shot it slightly better in the second half shooting it at 37%.

By the Numbers: Gil Carter led all scorers with 21 points... Tyler Daniel continued his strong play with getting his first double double on the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds... Vonzell Groom chipped in 16 points for his highest scoring output as a Laker... Lakers shot 24/70 from the field as the Eagles shot 40/67 from the field. The Lakers were called for 22 fouls including two players foul out.

What Coach Says: "We have to be able to create better scoring opportunities and have better shot selection. I thought we were at our best when we played with pace and were willing to go at them on the offensive end. Defensively we are not on the same page as a team. I'm thankful we have 4 practices before our next game. We are really going to get back to basics and work on our fundamentals. I believe in this team and I know its just a matter of time before it clicks with this group," said Coach Richard Westerlund. Westerlund also said, "I loved how Blake Stephens competed tonight. He is a worker. I also was really happy for Gil and Vonzell to get it going offensively. We need those guys to be successful... Ty has been awesome. We have really been able to count on him night in night out. He definitely deserved the All Tournament Recognition."

Extra Extra: Junior Tyler Daniel was named to the Northern Lakes Insurance All Tournament team averaging 16 ppg, 8.5 rpg, and 1.5 apg.

Up Next: Wright State Lake travels, to face another River State Conference opponent, on Friday November 4th to take on University of Rio Grande 7:30pm.
