Lady Lakers Survive Against Central Penn

Wright State Lake Women's Basketball came into Friday's game versus Central Penn, again looking to bounce back from a loss. The Knights of Central Penn used an uptempo pace throughout, in an attempt to keep the game tight, as they took 73 shots in the game and forced the Lakers in to 25 turnovers. However, the Lakers used pressure of their own, which proved to be too much for the Knights to handle, as they forced the Knights in to 32 turnovers and held Central Penn to 31% shooting from the field and 18% from three. In spite of very poor free throw shooting (49%), the Lakers were able to hold on for a 62-59 victory and improve to 4-7 overall on the season.

How It Happened: The Lakers were able to use a big third quarter, outscoring the Knights of Central Penn 24-18, to create a lead that they would not lose. Neither team was able to get much going offensively, early, as the score was just 24-23 Central Penn at half. The Lakers used that big third quarter en route to a 47-42 lead at the end of three. The Lakers were plagued by numerous missed free throws, going 22-45 from the free throw line, but they helped offset those misses by using 6 made three pointers en route to the victory. Haley McGillvary lead the Lakers with an impressive 17 points, 16 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks. Cami Hellwarth also played very well and finished with 16 points, 15 rebounds and also had 3 steals and 3 blocks. Kelsey Wertz contributed to the cause with 15 points on 4 made three pointers as well as 3 steals.

Up Next: Lakers next play in Batavia against UC-Clermont on Monday, December 19th with a 5:30pm tip-off.
