Lakers Take Down DII Urbana

Wright State University Lake Lakers accomplished a first in program history on Wednesday night by beating NCAA DII foe Urbana University 5-3.

Urbana 3 vs Wright State Lake 5

The Blue Knights and Lakers played a tightly contested ball game on Wednesday night, where the Lakers took an early 2-0 in the third inning and held on en route to a 5-3 victory. The Blue Knights of Urbana struggled all night to get runners across the plate and ultimately Laker pitchers stranded 12 runners on base. Lakers starter Carson Schuman pitched 4.0 shutout innings, scattering 4 hits and 3 walks along with 3 strikeouts. Schuman gave way to Dan Borchers and Sid Srinivasan who combined to pitch 3.2 innings and surrendered 3 runs (1 earned). After an 8th inning walk from Srinivasan, Coach Geier again made the move to the bullpen. This time bringing in left-handed pitcher Casey Grimm. Grimm was able to strike out the only batter he faced to end the 8th inning. Geier then brought in Quintin Cantelli to close out the contest in the ninth. Cantelli retired the first two batters he faced before surrendering a single to Nick Gallagher of the Blue Knights, bringing the tying run to the plate for Urbana. However, Cantelli was able to rebound and get Connor Coy to fly out to RF for the final out of the contest.

The Lakers were led by Isaac Fitzgerald with 2 RBIs, as well as Chad Anders with three hits on the night. Billy Lanman also added 2 hits and a RBI in the victory for the Lakers.

Coach Geier had this to say after the contest, "Very proud of my guys so far this year. This win was a big step in the right direction for this program. It was a great team win, as guys stepped up and did their jobs when called upon, once again. It is a great sign to see some of these younger guys making big plays day in and day out. The vibe is great within this team and I look for us to keep playing great sound baseball moving forward. We are using our performace in last years USCAA World Series (Going 0-2) as motivation to get back and really show what we can bring to the table every year in the USCAA."
